The Bureau of Land Managements General Land Office records are a great online resource for U.S. genealogists researching homestead records, bounty land grants, and other records for ancestors who purchased or received land in the thirty federal or public land states. In the eastern United States, many state archives have made available at least a portion of original grants and patents online. These online land records are all wonderful resources, however they generally only provide information on first owners or purchasers of the land. The bulk of American land records are found in the form of deeds, or private land/property transfers between individuals and corporations (non-governments). The vast majority of deeds in the United States are recorded and maintained by the county, parish (Louisiana), or district (Alaska). In the New England states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont, deeds are recorded at the town level. Due primarily to increased interest by title searchers for online access, as well as to help cut access/personnel costs in the future, many U.S. counties, especially in the eastern part of the country, have started putting their historical deed records online. The best place to begin your search for online historical deed records is the website of the Register of Deeds, or Clerk of Court, or whoever is in charge of recording deeds and other real estate records for your county/locality of interest. Salem, Massachusetts historic deed books 1-20 (1641-1709), for example, are available online from the Essex County Registry of Deeds. Thirty Pennsylvania counties have deeds available online (several going back to the time of county formation) through a system called Landex (fee for access). There are also other online sources for historical deed records, such as state archives and local historical societies. The Maryland State Archives is especially notable for its cooperative project to provide access to deeds and other land record instruments from across the state. Check out MDLandRec.net with searchable indexes and viewable volumes from Maryland counties dating back to the 1600s. The Georgia Virtual Vault, hosted by the Georgia State Archives, includes Chatham County, Georgia Deed Books 1785-1806. How to Find Historical Deeds Online Locate and browse the website of the local office in charge of recording property deeds. This might be the Register of Deeds, Recorder, Auditor, or County Clerk, depending on the particular locality. You can often locate these offices through a Google search ([county name] state deeds, or by going directly to the county government site and then drilling down to the appropriate department. If the county uses a third-party service to provide online access to historical deeds, they will generally include access information on the home page of the Register of Deeds.Explore FamilySearch. Tips for Researching Historical Deeds Online Once you locate a deeds collection of interest, explore it thoroughly to be sure the actual records available match the stated description. County record offices are putting digitized deeds online so fast that the available online documents sometimes exceed the text description. For example, the online Document Retrieval System for Martin County, North Carolina, states that it includes Old Deed Books U (08/26/1866) thru XXXXX, however, if you manually enter the book and page numbers from the older books in the search box, you will find that the digitized deed books available online actually go back to 1774, the date of county formation.Understand what you are looking at before you give up. Researchers new to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, research might move on after entering their ancestors name in the search box for Historical Deeds 1792–1857 and receiving no results. What they might not realize, however, is that this database, despite its misleading name, is a collection o f documents recorded in deed books that described people who were involved in the slave trade in the early days of Allegheny County, and does not include all deeds recorded between 1792 and 1857.Take advantage of current property records, tax maps and plat maps. Edgecombe County, North Carolina, has their historical deed indexes online, but the actual deed books are available online only back to September 1973. However, in some cases the deeds of current property owners include information on previous owners going back several generations, including deed book and page references. Itchoua is a brave, strong Basque who visited an island just off the coast of Guiana for a couple of months. During his visit on the island, Itchoua and his friends faced many dangers and took life threatening risks. He shows many character traits of bravery through his physical description, personality and his actions toward many things. During his act of bravery, he went through many obstacles and hardships while battling the rats. He is a very heroic battler because of what he thinks, says and does in the story of Three Skeleton Key. All the risks Itchoua took while going through danger shows hes brave by his personality, physical description and his actions. Firstly, Itchoua is a brave veteran who overcame many terrifying experiences while fighting with many vicious rats. Throughout the story, Itchoua proved that he was brave by putting his life at risk for the safety of his friends, persevered even though he was unconsicous and that he has characteristics of a leader. When the chief cried, Itchoua ran immediately not thinking at all and went to help his friend at risk. He sacrificed his life to help his friends from the dangerous rats. He cared for his friends and never only thought about himself. He did what ever he could for the safety of his friends. He used all his strength by trying to kill as many rats as possible and never gave up. He shows hes brave by fighting against the rats for his friends safety with the help of his friends at his side. He persevered even though he had blood dripping throughout his body. He didnt give up because he was brave to withstand the forces of the rats. He battled and battled not stopping even though he became unconsious. Itchoua is a leader because he told every one what to do from preventing the rats to do more damage. He took charge of the intense situation at the time. He told the people to go down the stairs, shut all the windows tightly, turn off the lamplight on the lighthouse. All these qualities he has shown while going through danger is because of his unique personality. Secondly, Itchoua shows signs of bravery by his physical description. He is very strong and brave because of the blood trickling from his body, his rat wounds and because he was unconscious. Itchoua shows he is brave by the blood trickling from his body because he is able to keep going even though he is really hurt. He doesnt give up, he is brave to stay alive and to keep battling. The rat wounds on his body were a sign of bravery to Itchoua. Those rat bites were dangerous in the very hot, dry climate in which infection is transmitted very rapidly. Even through these cirumstances, hes still brave to fight through these situations. He takes risks by battling the rats in which it has many outcomes like being hospitalized for months, becoming mental, handicapped or maybe itll even lead to death. He knew these outcomes would arise when battling the rats, he was still brave enough to give his all and not to give up. Itchoua shows signs of bravery when he became unconscious. When he became unconscious, he still stood up with all his might. He was brave to finish what the rats started and never quit. He showed he was brave by standing up to this battle with no fear at all. He was brave and fearless of the risks he took in many situations because of his physical description. Thirdly, he shows acts of bravery by his actions toward many of his petrifying experiences with the rats. Itchoua went through many hazardous situations throughout the story. In the story Dee asks her mother for some of the quilts which she and another family member had put together.This sudden interest in the family items was quite curious at first to Mama because these quilts were offered to Dee once before, in which at that time she showed no interest. Now all of a sudden she is interested in her mother’s most treasured of quilts- the ones that were made specifically from the old scraps of their ancestor’s clothing. These quilts had the very history of the Johnson family sewn into them, and Dee wanted them. At first it seemed at though Dee wanted them for the sentimental value which they carried, but it was soon apparent that her soul purpose was to put them on display.She wanted to hang them on her walls as to add a show of higher importance to her life for all her visitors to see. What is ironic in this is that the very thing she left home to escape is the one thing she coveted most to present in her home- the connection with her famil y history. It is almost as if she wanted nothing to do with her family’s heritage until it became fashionable to do so. At the end of the story, Mama saw Dee’s true intention for her quilts and gave it to who she thought worthy of them- Maggie.Maggie embraced her heritage and intended to put these quilts to everyday practical use. Right from the beginning the author gives a description of the house, which the reader will soon realize is quite comparable to Emily’s description.It states how the house is white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, qualities that have one purpose, that is, to impress and dra w the attention of the townspeople. In relation to this, Emily is presented as a wealthy white woman who dressed in an obvious manner as to draw attention to herself, as the house does. In Emily’s time, such a display of extravagance was just an invented way to give the impression of wealth.Later in the story as Emily ages, the author emphasizes the deterioration of both the house and Emily’s physical appearance. The house is described as smelling of dust and disuse, and the author describes Emily’s aging as well using similar words. He describes her aged voice to be harsh, and rusty, as if from disuse. At the end of the story, it is apparent that both the house and Emily have become empty and lifeless, in which neither are even remotely close to their former splendor.Also there is a comparison between Emily and the house involving a lack of change to the new generation. Emily showed an unwillingness to change from her now ancient behaviors, which are now looked at as unusual and odd by the townspeople. In the same way, there is a reluctance to change the traditions in relation to the house. An example of this is when representatives were sent to her home to collect her taxes, in which Emily completely rejected her responsibility. She referred back to the time when the once mayor, Colonel Sartoris remitted her taxes.
